with I Survived Author Lauren Tarshis
After generously donating four autographed copies of her incredibly popular I Survived books to the 2017 Dobbins Read-a-Thon, author Lauren Tarshis is now donating her time. Lauren Tarshis Skyped with Poland's 3rd and 4th grade students on Friday, October 6 at the Poland Seminary High School auditorium.
Most of the half-hour session took shape from student questions. Led by Mr Blanch and our English-Language Arts teachers, students at Dobbins used Google Forms to write thoughtful questions and voted for their favorite. Winners read their questions directly to one of the most popular authors on the bookshelves of Dobbins Elementary.
This event was a crystal clear reminder of why I love what I do. Our students were fantastic, and we were all so fortunate to have a personal interaction with an author that continues to inspire young readers from all over the country.
Lauren Tarshis was very human, incredibly inspiring, and genuinely interested in her interactions with our students. Thanks to Mr. Blanch and the flexibility of our teachers, our students were able to vote for their favorite questions on a Google Form and 10 students asked the questions they wrote directly to the I Survived author.
Through her answers, Lauren shared how her 4 children inspired her. She told personal stories while she walked through her home and grabbed pictures off of her wall to show our students her family photos. She admitted that she was a struggling reader through her teenage years and how writing was the furthest thing from her mind. Through it all, she shared her inspirations, her travels, her hours of research on historical topics, her secrets for the writing process, and her failures. She shared a lot of herself. That's exactly what great writers do.
I hope your child enjoyed the experience as much as I did. I want to thank Lauren and David Dreyfuss who made this possible, our district technology team for the hours of work they put into set up, Mr. Blanch for his Google magic, Mrs. Dunnavant for turning the library into an I Survived and historical fiction paradise for the last two weeks, transportation for getting us to PSHS in the rain, our staff for their enthusiasm, and our students for simply being awesome!
3rd Grade Visits Fire Station 92
3rd Grade classes took a Walking Field Trip to Fire Station 92 on Thursday, October 12. Thanks to Mr. Bill O'Hara and the Western Reserve Joint Fire District volunteers, our students toured the fire station after taking a class in fire safety in the education room.
