Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Students

Poland Seminary High School Sophomores, Monica Kurjan, Laiken Maurer, Rachel Mowad, Lauren Pepperney and Marik Rogenski have been chosen to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar which will be held at Youngstown State University in early June of 2016.

The Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership mission is to recognize outstanding sophomore leaders and encourage and prepare them to be the next generation of leaders in our country.  This widely acclaimed international program began in 1958 when actor Hugh O’Brian returned from Africa, inspired by a nine-day visit spent working and talking with Dr. Albert Schweitzer.  After returning to the U.S.A., Hugh O’Brian decided to make his own contribution to society by establishing HOBY.  He chose youth leadership as the most promising enterprise that HOBY could promote.

HOBY provides opportunities for critical thinking by promoting democracy and America’s incentive system, and by encouraging social responsibility among individuals and participating corporations.  Students will learn to think critically, enhance their leadership skills, identify their own particular leadership strengths, and learn more about free enterprise, volunteerism and service to community.
