Snow Delays / Closings

1.  With winter weather approaching, it is appropriate to review the districts’ policies and procedures in the event it is necessary to delay or close schools due to hazardous weather/road conditions.

2. Should the school district exceed the maximum numbers of calamity days per negotiated agreement, makeup days would be added at the end of the school year. The first makeup day would be Thursday, June 6 and additional days would be consecutively scheduled weekdays. Teacher report day would be the weekday following the last makeup day.

3. Decisions to delay or close schools will be made in most instances between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m. Any change in the normal school schedule will be announced to staff, students, and the public through these methods:

  • TV Channels: 21, 27, 33, and 62
  • Radio Stations: 570 AM-WKBN, 1390 AM-WNIO, 93.3 WNCD, 95.9 FM-WAKZ (KISS), 98.9 FM-WMXY, 106.1 FM-WBBG, 101 FM-HOT, and Y103 FM.
  • http://www.poland.k12.oh.us/ or WKBN.com or WYFX.com or Polandbulldogs.com
  • “All Call” computerized phone notification to parents/employees

4. Should a delay be implemented, here are some important procedures to remember: A two hour delay means all schools simply start two hours later. Students’ hours for example would be:

  • High School would start at 9:45 a.m. instead of 7:45 a.m.
  • Middle School and McKinley Elem. would start at 10:35 a.m. instead of 8:35 a.m.
  • Dobbins and Union Elementary would start at 9:55 a.m. instead of 7:55 a.m.
  • Bus routes in AM would be two hours later. For example a 7:35 a.m. bus pickup would become a 9:35 a.m. pickup.
  • Staff would report two hours later than normal, unless part-time. Part-time should check with their supervisors as to hours.
  • Cafeteria lunch times remain the same. No change.
  • Dismissal times and afternoon bus run times remain the same as on a normal school day.

5. It is our policy and practice not to delay or close schools unless it is absolutely necessary. The reason is that closing or delays can cause major disruptions to today’s families where both parents (or a single parent) works. These decisions are always difficult and usually involve many variables, some of which may or may not be known to you or the public at the time the change in the school days is announced.

6. Regardless of this official policy, students and personnel should always use good judgment and caution about the conditions of the individual roads on which they must travel. Drive safely at all times.

7. All administrators (principals, transportation, cafeteria, and spec ed. director are urged to remind staff, students and parents about these procedures.
