Poland Schools Will Remain Remote and Will Return to In-person Learning January 19, 2021

Hello Bulldog Families, This is Dr. Holland, Interim Superintendent of Poland Schools.  As we head into the Holiday break, we want to report the results of the recent parent survey and the District’s plans for the rest of the school year.  There were over 600 responses to the survey.  Everyone recognizes that having children back in school is a priority.  However, we want to ensure that Poland Schools provide a safe, positive and consistent educational program with high quality instruction.

The District administration and teachers have worked together to modify our educational programming to create a specialized instruction format based on student learning levels, for both in-person and remote students.  In order for this new approach to be successful, we must have all employees reporting to work and doing what we do best, provide great care and support for your children.

Considering the potential impact of Covid-19 following the holidays, along with the fact that nearly 75% of the survey participants acknowledged support for remaining 100% remote until January 19th, the end of the second grading period, Poland Schools will remain remote and will return to in-person learning Tuesday, January 19th.  During this period, each building will be making preparations and modifications to their instructional programming to implement the following on January 19th:

  • Kindergarten-5th grade teachers will continue with the in-person teaching model and the parent-selected remote learning model. (The same learning modality as the beginning of the school year.)

  • 6th grade to 12th grade teachers will continue to teach in-person, but also live stream their live instruction to the remote learning students.  These students will have teacher driven instruction during their normal daily school schedule to provide an enhanced online learning experience.

These changes will better meet the needs of all children regardless if they are in-person or remote.  Currently, more than 50% of 9-12 students are remote and more than 75% of k-6 students are in-person.

Third Quarter Learning Modality Selection

We are changing the third grading period enrollment deadline from January 4th to January 11th to permit parents to select or change their student’s enrollment for the third grading period. This deadline change will permit parents to change their teaching and learning modality after having experienced the pilot learning models.  As a reminder, once a student enrolls in the remote option, they must remain remote through the rest of the grading period.

It is our goal to maintain this instructional plan and schedule for the rest of the school year.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we make these preparations.

On behalf of the Board of Education and Administrative Team, we wish you a wonderful and joyous Holiday Season and a safe and healthy New Year.
