In response to concerns regarding the vacant North Elementary School building. While the school district still maintains and uses the building, the Board of Education spends about $40,000 a year on utilities and upkeep. When the Board of Education was approached by the Mahoning Valley Community School about the possibility of leasing North Elementary School, several of the Board members were intrigued by the possibilities. Especially the possibility of an outside entity paying to replace the roof and repair problem areas in the building which is estimated around $400,000 in exchange for a four-year lease.
As the Board’s review of these possibilities, as well as any pitfalls, progressed, the Board learned of unanticipated potential complications that could affect the ownership of future vacant school buildings. While it can be beneficial to receive additional funding to assist in the maintenance of our school buildings, Poland Schools is no longer interested in leasing any school building to a community school.
