Fifth Grade students standing outside of Poland Middle School with Mr. DeBolt, holding various sized spherical items like exercise balls, softballs, and candies to represent the planets.

Just how big is our solar system? Mr. DeBolt's fifth grade classes demonstrated the vast distances between planets on a smaller scale, using tic-tacs, Nerd candies, softballs, exercise balls, and golf balls to represent the planets. They were all so small in comparison to our very large and bright sun! Mr. DeBolt told them that Nicoletta as Neptune could have been as far as 2 miles away for this to be 100% accurate, but then this would have been a field trip! It was a fun day representing the planets!
