On February 24, 2026 in the afternoon, Poland Middle School and McKinley Elementary School entered into a lockdown in order for school personnel to attend to the medical needs of a student. This situation was rectified quickly along with the assistance of our school nurse and local health and safety forces. In some situations, Poland Local School District enacts lockdown and safety measures to ensure due diligence, clear hallways, and to respect the privacy of those involved. The lockdown concluded around 2:10 p.m. for normal operations to resume. Thank you to our students, teachers, and staff for their cooperation.

At approximately 8:20 p.m. 1/10/2026, a fire alarm was triggered during the PSHS Winter Dance at Poland Seminary High School. Attendees were evacuated from the building for approximately five minutes while the fire department inspected the building. Fog from a fog machine used to decorate for the dance had triggered the alarm. Poland Fire authorities inspected the building an determined it safe for returning to normal operations.

Joint Letter to the Community from the Board of Education and Superintendent

Together, we share an important and heartfelt update about the health and future plans of our Superintendent, Mr. Hockenberry, as well as our plan for the District moving forward. Mr. Hockenberry has recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. After careful consultation with his medical team and with the support of his family, he will be taking a medical leave of absence beginning December 1 to focus on his treatment and recovery. We understand this news may be difficult, and we appreciate your compassion and support during this time.
