Five PSHS Students selected for 2026 STEM Summer Research Project Internships at Youngstown State University

POLAND, Ohio — Five Poland Seminary High School students have been selected to participate in STEM summer research project internships at Youngstown State University. Incoming seniors  will be contributing to research over a two month period, earning college credit and a stipend for their work.

The summer program is open to high school seniors and incoming YSU freshmen for the 2026–2027 school year. Over the course of seven weeks, students gain valuable research experience in a college-course setting. 

All five students are active members of numerous school and extracurricular groups, including the Poland Seminary High School Marching Band, Speech & Debate, Interact Club, and many other school groups. They are also enrolled in many AP/CCP courses, pursuing a college education while in high school.

Poland Local School District extends its best wishes to Eli, Nate, Jasmeet, Ben, and Navtej this summer in their internships. Their commitment is commendable and reflects their dedication to academic excellence.

Eli Hagler 

Participating in Physics Research
The project is focused on Rubidium separation of isotopes by laser excitation (SILEX). In this project they will work to demonstrate and characterize a laser-assisted isotopic separation process in Rubidium.

Eli has expressed interest in Electrical Engineering and is excited because of the overlap between the internship and his interests in physics and engineering.

Nate Hupp 

Participating in Physics Research
The project is focused on Rubidium separation of isotopes by laser excitation (SILEX). In this project they will work to demonstrate and characterize a laser-assisted isotopic separation process in Rubidium.

Nate will be getting a head start in his planning to study Aerospace Engineering in college. "I’m extremely excited and grateful to have been accepted into the program."

Jasmeet Kaur 

Participating in Mathematics and Statistics Research
The project is focused on parametric equations, which provide a way to describe curves by expressing the coordinates of points as functions of a third variable, usually time, rather than directly relating x and y.  In this project they will be researching parametric equations and writing  programs in MATLAB to graph spirographs and other parametric functions.

Jasmeet is excited and grateful for the opportunity to study in the program. She is interested in pursuing civil engineering and said that the focus on mathematics before senior year and college will be beneficial.

Benjamin Miller  

Participating in Biological Sciences Research. 
The research will examine whether structured confidence predictions and brief post-assessment reflections (“exam wrappers”) improve students’ metacognitive calibration (predicted vs. actual performance), study strategy adjustments, and quiz performance during the BIOL 2603 Integrated General Biology summer session.

Ben is grateful to receive this opportunity, saying "I'm most excited to work with a professor with experience in fields I am looking into." He is planning to study Biology, likely through a Pre-Med track in college.
