“The Poland Schools Double Down on Reading Summer Program”
Summer School Program for Grades 1-3


Dear Poland Parents,

Poland Local Schools is excited to announce another year of our summer literacy program! The program will take place July 24 - August 11, 2023, Monday-Friday. Sessions will be held at McKinley Elementary School. Listed below are some of the target areas that will be addressed during the three-week time span. Although summer schedules can be unpredictable, “The Poland Schools Making Summer Count: Double Down on Reading” is highly structured so attendance at every session is strongly encouraged. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the registration for your session below. Every student attending the Summer School program must complete an Emergency Medical Authorization FormYou must download the form, fill it out, and return it via registration form upload, mail, or email.

There will be a max of 15 students per session.


Grade 1 - Rising First Graders Explicit Literacy Program
For students entering Grade 1

July 24 - August 11
8:00 - 9:30 a.m.

Daily attendance is strongly encouraged.

Target Areas:

  • Solidify letter knowledge 

  • Build fluency with high frequency words  

  • Develop basic phonemic skills (isolation, segmentation, and blending)  

  • Learn how to read and spell words like tap, jet, spin, and frost


Grade 2 - Rising Second Graders Explicit Literacy Program
For students entering Grade 2

July 24 - August 11
10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Daily attendance is strongly encouraged.

Target Areas:

  • Learn and practice basic and advanced phonemic awareness skills and then leverage those skills for reading and spelling.

  • Examine phoneme-grapheme relationships in complex single-syllable words with 3 Syllable Types (Closed, Open, VCE).

  • Read 2-, 3-, 4-Syllable Words with three-syllable types and the Schwa.


Grade 3 - Rising Third Graders Explicit Literacy Program
For students entering Grade 3

July 24 - August 11
12:30 - 2:00 p.m.

Daily attendance is strongly encouraged.

Target Areas:

  • Learn and practice basic and advanced phonemic awareness skills and then leverage those skills for reading and spelling.

  • Examine phoneme-grapheme relationships in complex single-syllable words with 3 Syllable Types (Closed, Open, VCE).

  • Read 2-, 3-, 4-Syllable Words with three-syllable types and the Schwa.
